Digital Transformation is a two step journey. First, a company will Digitize by building a digital backbone with supporting data culture and fabric to build operational excellence.  Amazon selling books. Second, a company becomes Digital and expands into new Customer Value Streams. Amazon selling everything to all markets like Pharmacy.

Companies have traditionally been structured where responsibility for people, process and technology is divided across the organization. The silos cause bottlenecks and lack of transparency and reusability of processes and data across a company. What is fundamentally different and difficult about the Digital Transformation journey is that executive leadership must be responsible for designing or re-deigning the business to be digital and creating a digital backbone.

A digital backbone needs an overall business alignment and accessibility to data at all levels of an organization.

In 2018, companies with a digital platform were 3 times as innovative (measured from new offerings) than companies without a digital platform but fewer than 5% of companies reported having a widely adopted and valuable digital platform. In one study, 44% of executives in established companies identified the operational backbone as "the one building block that is currently the biggest obstacle to digital transformations.

Technology is only 10% of the digital challenge. It is the messy 90% of people, process, data and everything else that is often an impediment of Digital Transformation programs.  Many digital capabilities like Artificial Intellegence and SMACIT are commodities and are readily available but are difficult to implement on top of silos. The results of digital investments often miss business revenue or cost reduction expectations.

She is an accomplished Information Management leader who has delivered a wide range of IT solutions with a focus on Business Intelligence/Analytics, business and data architecture, database technology research, and large-scale operations management. She has directed teams of 120+ for large scale technical initiatives, ranging from $1.2 -$20M and budget of $25M+. In her various roles she has overseen all aspects of how complex data is gathered, managed, protected, and monetized.

Barbara is a recognized speaker on emerging data management trends, technology, innovation and tool adoption. She actively participates in mentoring and staff development efforts. She is a board member of ai4biz.org and a founding member of the Orange County Chapter - Private Directors Association.
